Emerald Teeth (download track)
Constellation - 2020

Michael Panontin
T. Gowdy's 'Emerald Teeth' is the fifth installment in Constellation's Corona Borealis Longplay Singles series. The Montreal label has been commissioning a 12"-length track for download each Thursday as pandemic support for its stable of musicians, making the music PWYC for the first week with 100% of the revenue going directly to the artist. And if that wasn't enough, each track is paired with an experimental video making this not just an incredible value but also a compelling audio-visual experience.

'Emerald Teeth' picks up for the most part where Gowdy's recent Constellation debut Therapy with Colour leaves off. But whereas Therapy... featured plenty of earnest, sombre tones - which in a way made it feel somewhat like a successor to Plastikman's groundbreaking Consumed disc - 'Emerald Teeth' is music of a much more colourful sort. The piece is quite literally a bouncing, bleeping blast of minimal electronics. Gowdy describes it as "an etude on the sculpturality of resilience [where] timbres are squeezed together in a small suction filled compression chamber to produce a warped temporal mould, highlighting the role of pressure as a shaping element". Either way, set to L.A.-based videographer Kai Luen Liang's visually stunning technicolour adaptation, 'Emerald Teeth' is a riveting ten-minute excursion that is certainly well worth your time.
