Michael Dubue's occupation ought to more accurately be described as 'soundtrack composer in search of non-existent films' or something equally arcane. The Ottawa-based multi-instrumentalist keeps cranking out those cinematic treasures to little fanfare, including the occasional installment of what he dubs his Lonely Cinema series. This download-only single, though not a part of that series, is most definitely film-worthy, and finds Dubue at the absolute top of his game.
Both tracks were for the most part recorded at Studio Cimetiere, the converted church in Quyon, Quebec where Dubue records his music (percussion was added elsewhere). The terse 'Camryn' is the more straightforward of the two, with its carefree guitar twangs and delicately placed synthesizer hinting at the opening credits of an imaginary western. 'Pink Window' is equally interesting, though with an intensity that suggests something much more film noir. Dubue's crisp bassline is superb, setting the track up for six and a half minutes of pure edge-of-your-seat tension.
At $8 for the two tracks, '‘Camryn' is hardly a bargain. But with Linda Meli's eye-catching artwork, this would look swell pressed up on vinyl, in either 7, 10 or 12-inch format.
