Sunday Morning's latest single is a reworking of Art Bergmann's 'The Junkie Don't Care', originally issued by the BC punk icon on his 1988 Crawl with Me set. And as one would expect, these young Vancouverites bring with them the requisite awe and admiration that such a track - and artist - deserve.

"Art's music has been a soundtrack to my life ever since I was a pink-haired teenager writing bad high school poetry in spiral notebooks during math class," Sunday Morning's singer Bruce Wilson wrote.

The group's initial aim was to take 'The Junkie Don't Care', which Bergamnn composed with ex-Pointed Stick Gord Nicholl, and rework it into something that sounded like "a Nick Cave/Suicide cough syrup-induced fever dream". All good so far. The pop-punk hooks of Bergmann's original always seemed to belie the underlying dark subject matter in the lyrics. So Wilson took his "stripped-down" demo to the studio, and Felix Fung, Max Sample and Emily Bach fleshed it out with guitar, bass/keys and violin respectively.

Wilson is rightfully proud of the finished product. "When I took 'Junky Don't Care' to Felix and Max in the studio, it blossomed into something with more nuance and depth," he adds. "Emily added both beautiful discord and harmony to the song. She brought the essence of desperation and melancholic sadness conveyed in the lyrics perfectly."

For now, 'Junky Don't Care' is only available digitally. But the guys have a long-player in the works for 2023 and that, we are assured, will be on vinyl. So stay tuned.
